Strolling through the dazzling greenery of Atzaro’s lush gardens you are transported to a place of calm relaxation, serene thoughts and mental clarity. The owners of this eco retreat couldn’t have devised a more restful, recuperative place so far removed from the goings on down south you might be in a completely different country.
Every inch of the landscaping is meticulously conceived from the long lap pool with the pretty pegoda framing it at the far end, the rows of lime trees painted with ivory barks and interspersed with the most sumptuous day loungers. You almost expect angels to descend and a harp melody to trill softly in the background. For this is a garden of Eden so rich and densely planted and with such attention to detail that some of the other aspects of this retreat might be forgiven.
For whilst it is true that the vista is spectacular as a hotel it sometimes falls short. The overall ethos is barefoot luxury and rustic yet a hotel room needs to be carefully conceived so that the guests can fully relax. For upwards of three hundred euros per night mid season one expects a room that is soundproofed against the scrapings and clattering of fellow guests. I had to endure a one hour monologue by my neighbour and was disturbed repeatedly into the night by the comings and goings of those on the floor below. The bathroom is wearily dated and because I stayed over a particularly wet period in September there was a distinct dampness to the air.
Breakfast needs a revamp, admittedly their gas supply broke down so I couldn’t sample their hot offerings, but the buffet is uninspiring, it could be magnificent with all the local produce available in the near vicinity.
The spa also needs attention, the treatments were satisfactory but the room where I had my facial was separated into two so you could hear the person and their therapist in the next cabin.
This retreat has so much potential but the owners really need to consider an interior refit so that the inner and outer harmonizes together. Once this is achieved it really will be heaven.
