Piccolo Lago

Piccolo Lago

Away from the tourist crowds of Stresa and Como lies the serene and enchanting Lake Mergozza. It’s here in the most imposing of settings that 2 Michlelin* Piccolo de Lago resides. Perched on the edge of the lake, the unlikely modernist structure houses a kitchen that is creating and master minding food that is far from the ordinary.

The floor to ceiling windows across the lake, combined with some views into the kitchen give the space a lively sense of theatre.

I was particularly enamoured with our pre dinner bites. Having spent the best part of two months in Spain prior to this trip, I had yet to taste a Gazpacho infused with such balanced and clear flavours as I found unexpectedly in the Italian lakes.

It goes without saying that the food is artfully plated and I was impressed that some of the dishes were served by the chef who prepared the food as opposed to a waiter. It reminded me a little of Noma in Copenhagen, an unpretentious and refreshing take.

A deconstructed carbonara was the winning dish of the night.  An obvious classic Italian dish worked into a modern day take, creamy, unctuous and disappointingly small!

Piccolo De Lago is cooking serious food in relaxed surroundings and for me this is the perfect combination.
